A riveting production by the Berliner Ensemble closed the record-breaking programme of the 23rd Flora Theatre Festival

“Nico Holonics excelled in the adaptation of Grass’ Tin Drum for two hours and the audience did not want him to stop acting”, reported Jan H. Vitvar, journalist of the weekly Respekt, from Olomouc on Sunday evening.

The phenomenal production by Oliver Reese, the artistic director of the renowned Berliner Ensemble, on the stage of the Moravské divadlo theatre brought a proper full stop to the 23rd annual Flora Theatre Festival. The twelve-day festival programme, framed by the Bergmanesque leitmotif Cries and Whispers, presented from Wednesday 15th on its ten venues in Olomouc almost 90 events – the university town welcomed stars of Czech and German drama as well as top-class Korean dancers.
“The interest of people in seeing the festival productions was enormous this year and the number of audience members of the longest ever festival has for the first time gone over the ten thousand threshold,” says director Petr Nerušil looking back at the festival and adds: “We are happy to have noticed the warm reactions of the festival audiences, guests and performers, whom we have been meeting with every day and talking to about phenomena of contemporary theatre. We are looking forward to welcoming them next year again at the 24th Flora which will be framed by the leitmotif A Beautiful New World.”
