“Mother and daughter, what a horrendous combination of feelings, chaos and doom.” A sonata is a musical composition for a solo instrument, therefore, the discord and conflict of the drama are weaved already into the film’s title along with the musical themes. Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann, two legends of Swedish cinematography, act out a long and unique central scene, but instead of the expected reconciliation, there’s only disillusion caused by dysfunctional family relationships.
