In the early 1970s, Ingmar Bergman made an outstanding debut in the field of television production with one of the most successful series in Swedish history. He subsequently edited the six-part series into a feature film, which is the most straightforward one in our festival selection. An ongoing marriage crisis crammed into studio interiors serves as a psychological study of relationship and dependence or a simple need for intimacy. A film so suggestive in its depiction of the stultifying mundane and day-to-day routine setting in after the honeymoon phase – that the divorce rate in Sweden allegedly rose after its premiere.
