What would you if the future you envisioned suddenly vanished? When your plans fall through? When you cannot even imagine the next day? And what if this is only the beginning?

Energetic actor Franz Pätzold comes back to the Flora Theatre Festival after the great success with the Balkan macht frei production as a member of a group of independent artists Fritz Cavallo. Not a text, but the present moment, the atmosphere, extreme physical and mental states are at the centre of attention of this interdisciplinary group connecting theatre, visual art and media. This also applies for the music performance Cries and Whispers, which puts the audiences out of their comfort zone, makes them doubt, feel a bit disoriented in a world without fixed boundaries and in vain searching for safety shores. An unsettling theatre production with Pätzold as a mysterious guide through a night cruise of associative images and raw poetry.

The independent group of artists Fritz Cavallo München formed in 2016 after Franz Pätzold (theatre, film and TV actor), Josef Motzet (photographer and cameraman), Jaromir Zezula (art historian, musician and cultural manager) and Roland Bersch (director) met together while working on the Frank Castorf production Die Abenteuer des guten Soldaten Švejk im Weltkrieg (The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Svejk During the World War, 2016) at Residenztheater. The first project of their own was a staged video installation Whiteout, which was displayed at the Galerie-Atelier Ck-f in Munich in 2017. The Fritz Cavallo group is characterised by their multi-genre focus – they create films, videos, photography, but also stage concepts for theatre. An open creative process of collective work and an authorial approach is an unconditional priority for them.

“The boundaries of Franz Pätzold lie further than with other people. He hits harder than hard”, writes the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung about the young actor. This twenty-nine-year-old actor originally from Dresden, Franz Pätzold (1989) has worked his way up to being one of the leading acting figures of Residenztheater Munich. It was actually his first engagement after completing his studies at Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. He has regularly cooperated with directors such as Frank Castorf, Oliver Frljić and Anne Lenk on the Munich-based scene. He shocked the Flora Theatre Festival audience with his performance in the production Balkan macht frei two years ago. He had an extreme physical performance, throwing himself all in, demonstrating how bitter and painful theatre can be. He is leaving Munich for Vienna as of September 2019 together with the new intendant (artistic director) of Burgtheater Martin Kušej and with his theatre colleague Bibiana Beglau. They will both join the current stars of Viennese drama such as Peter Simonischek, Martin Wuttke, Joachim Meyerhoff, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Elisabeth Orth, Caroline Peters and others. Apart from theatre, he also focuses actively on film, TV and radio production. He has starred in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film Werk ohne Autor (Never Look Away, 2018), which was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign-language film.
