Lukáš Brutovský JOCASTA Slovenské komorné divadlo Martin & Městská divadla pražská (Divadlo Komedie)

A modern version of the classic myth about toxic masculinity – from Sophocles to Donald Trump. A story of a character who gets more space in the famous tragedy about Oedipus only when the messenger describes her suicide… A clash of the ancient with current times, a myth with #MeToo – in an original production by Lukáš Brutovský, the artistic director of the theatre from Martin.
    Discussion follows.

    Ticket price: 250 / 150 Kč
The white empty space brings out the performances of Peter Konáš and Jana Olhová, who, in satin tracksuits and sneakers, reminiscent of a hip-hop battle, alternate with their monologues. (…) The production of two theatres, two nations and cultures, two acting personalities is not only a refreshing dialogue of the state of the Czech and Slovak acting, but it is also a relevant stimulus for discussing acute topics in the horizon of a forgotten historical awareness, which is, also thanks to such creative acts, increasingly topical and necessary.

Brutovsky manages to find actual intersections with the present through Greek myths in the text of Jocasta. They are not overly complex, they feel organic and authentic, the author moves from one theme to another quite smoothly.

Lukáš Brutovský (1988) graduated in directing and dramaturgy from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he also received his PhD. Already during his studies, he had success with productions of the Russian classics The Death of Tarelkin and A Profitable Position (nominated for the DOSKY Awards). He writes plays (Talenty/Talents and Na obed/For Lunch) and translates (A. N. Ostrovsky, P. Löhle). Since 2015, he has been the artistic director of the Slovenské komorní divadlo in Martin, where he staged Ostrovsky's grotesque comedy The Forest, which he also performed at Flora in 2015.
He has collaborated with Slovak, Hungarian and Czech theatres. His brilliant take on Marysha at Brno's HaDivadlo earned him the Divadelní noviny Award for Production of the Year 2014; and it is still in the repertoire. He is the author of several plays and, in addition to directing, he also contributes to the creation of productions as a translator, author of adaptations and music composer.

Since 2018, Divadlo Komedie has once again became a part of the Městská divadla pražská / Prague City Theatres (together with the Rokoko and ABC theatres), where it had been present since 1954 with a short break. In the 1990s, the stage won the audience's favour with its unconventional take on classics, which were brought to the stage by director Jan Nebeský and artistic director Michal Dočekal. After he left in 2002, the project of the Dušan D. Pařízek and David Jařab won and they managed to turn Divadlo Komedie into one of the most progressive scenes in ten years relying on German and Austrian drama.
In 2018, on the initiative of director Daniel Přibyl, Komedie returned to the Prague City Theatres. With its ambitious programme, it targets young audiences in particular, with young artists such as Júlia Rázusová (Galapagos), Lukáš Brutovský (Hussite Trilogy, Jocasta), Tomáš Loužný (Komedie Jack staví dům / The House that Jack Built Comedy), as well as Anna Klimešová (The Prince) and Michal Hába (An Enemy of the People, The Glory and Fall of King Otakar, The Heroes of Capitalist Labour), who both presented their works at Flora. The artistic efforts of the new management were awarded the title of Theatre of the Year 2019 right after their first season.

Slovenské komorné divadlo (SKD) in Martin was founded in 1944 as the second professional Slovak theatre. The SKD has significantly shaped Slovak culture, and its name is associated with a number of directors (A. Bagar, P. Scherhaufer and dramaturge M. Porubjak) and actors (J. Kroner, V. Müller, Š. Kvietik, E. Krížiková and M. Kňažko).
The productions of Ľubomír Vajdička (Seven Days to the Funeral), Roman Polák (Ivanov and Misanthrope) and Dodo Gombár (Štúrovci and www. narodnycintorin. sk), which have been awarded the DOSKY awards, and regular guest appearances at prestigious festivals, prove the high prestige and synergy of the ensemble.
SKD impressed at last year's Flora with Amsler's interpretation of The Three Sisters. Before that, it had presented two of Polák's directorial works (Striptease Tartuffe and Ivanov) or the production Forest by Lukáš Brutovský, who is the current artistic director of the theatre.
